A confession from a developer who wakes at 4am to check what his agents shipped overnight

"Hey, I'm Adam and I'm addicted to Agents."

I lay awake staring into the darkness. I check my watch. It's 4:08am. 1hr and 22mins to go before I allow myself to get up. There needs to be some restraint.

I still plan though, that's fine. What will my agents do today? I will get them to work on the "Achievement/Badge" feature, just like the one in Audible. That will be a good addition to the app. I have the Linear issues setup. I'm trying out their "Project" mode - seems to work nicely. Yes, the agents can get this done by 8:30 this morning.

Finally the alarm goes off and I can get up. Let's just check first what the agents accomplished overnight. I run three simultaneously at the moment. Two on my old Macbook Pro M1 and one on my current Macbook. I was scared of this Claude code "remote-control" feature and rightly so. I knew it would start creeping into all areas of my life. But it's fine, I can manage it.

The two agents on the M1 surprise me by how much they have achieved overnight. I see they have both produced summaries and I feel a slight thrill. It's the same feeling I have when I receive a present. The thought of something new and shiny waiting just for me. I scan through the agent summaries. It seems to all make sense. Long gone are the days where I would check the code. I still check the app though, I do still care a little bit.

When I look at the app it looks good, really good. I run all designs through Claude Design these days, you know. I even have a "Design system", I'm doing this thing properly.

I feel conflicting emotions of pride and shame swimming around inside me as I look at the app. Pride as it was my idea. Shame as I alone know how much the agents played a part in the implementation. I'm still hanging onto the thread of calling myself an engineer but everyday it gets a little thinner.

I logon to my main computer and set the agents to work on the next tasks. Makes sense right. They can crack on with things whilst I'm showering and getting dressed. It's all about efficiency. I'll just check X whilst I'm here though. You know, just in case.

I check the plan from the agents. I just scan it. Yup, that all makes sense. I'll go with their recommendations, I'm sure they'll be fine. They usually are. If not I can always change it later, coding is solved after all. I make a note to refactor the code at some point as the app is starting to feel sluggish. I'm definitely going to do that soon.

I check Posthog. Still only a few users but I'm sure I'm on the right track now. That last business discussion with Opus 5.5 really brought some things to light. The direction we agreed makes much more sense now. I check the Stripe dashboard too, just in case there are any new paying customers. Nope, still hovering at seven. Joma on Youtube is going for $10,000 MRR and I bet he makes it. If he can why can't I? At the moment I'm just hoping for 10 paying users but I'm sure I'll get there soon. This "Achievement/Badge" feature will help.

I check the clock in the top right corner of my Mac screen. Damn, is that the time already. Just 5 more minutes and then I'll go help my wife with the kids. I make sure the "remote-control" feature is running though so I can check the progress on my phone. Ok, lets go.

I try desperately hard not to check my phone when with the family in the kitchen. I make excuses to pop out to the lounge every now and then to check the agent progress - Oh my god, Opus 5.5 is so fast! It's already completed 3 of the 8 tasks. I feel the rush of dopamine flow through me - This is going to be so good.

I drop the kids off, itching to take the phone out my pocket as I wave good bye. Once they go through the door I check Claude again. 6 out of 8 tasks done! It's pushed some UI changes, I check them in production. They look ok but there's a few things that need tweaking. I open Wispr Flow and record a few notes of what needs changing. I save this feedback for later.

At breakfast with my wife we both stare at our phones. That's what modern couples tend to do these days from what I can tell. At least I am being productive. It's not even 8:30 yet and I've already built and shipped most of a new feature. Genius.

I remember when I used to meditate in the morning. I would sit there for 30 mins at a time just doing nothing. I can't believe I used to spend so much time just sitting. Nowadays I am building out features that would have taken me days to build previously. How things have changed.

Back at my computer all alone again. All eight tasks are completed. Each one marked as "Done" on Linear. Even though I didn't do the implementation there is a sense of satisfaction there. I can't deny that. I'm thinking to spin up a few more agents. Three or maybe even four. I wonder how many it takes to make a swarm? Today feels like it will be a good day. I open Zed and press cmd + N to open a new agent pane. A smile cracks across my face. The possibilities are wide open.
